International driving licences are valid in Vietnam. Non-Vietnamese citizens are only permitted to drive in Vietnam if they hold a Vietnamese driving licence or an international driving licence. Wearing a helmet is compulsory in Vietnam. Below you will find the specific rules regarding international driving licences and if you do not have an international driving licence, how to get a Danish driving licence changed into a Vietnamese.

Regarding the use of International driving licence
With an international driving licence you are only allowed to drive the types of vehicles mentioned in your international driving licence.

How to get a Danish driving licence changed into a Vietnamese
Condition:

In order to change a valid Danish driving license into a corresponding Vietnamese driving license, applicant must hold a valid Vietnamese residence permit of at least six month’s validity.

If you are not in possession of a valid driving licence for motorbikes, you have to pass a motorbike test.

In Hanoi, applications for Vietnamese driving licences should be directed to the Department of Transportation and Urban Works, 16 Cao Ba Quat Stree, bringing one passport photo.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the address is 63, Ly Tu Trong, District 1.

Procedures for converting a Danish driving license into a corresponding Vietnamese driving license:
 

In Ho Chi Minh City, applications should be directed to the Office of Transportation, 252 Ly Chinh Thang Street, Ward 9, District 1 - Telephone 08 9350 551/9350 517.

Most Commonly Requested Documents:

• 02 copies of Drivers license.
Translation and legalization of driving licence can be made by the Danish Embassy in Hanoi, or at the Danish Economic and Commercial Office in HCMC.
Consular Fees: 800,000 VND (DKK 240,00)

• 02 copies of Passport.
Copy of passport (information page with name, photo and visa pages to Vietnam)
If a translation and legalization of the passport is requested, this can be carried out by the Vietnamese Authorities at the following address:

• Photographs – remember to bring relevant photos
Hanoi: 3 photographs sized 3x4cm,
HCMC 2 photographs sized 2x3cm.

In provincial areas, travellers should consult local police authorities to determine exactly what action is required to obtain a temporary driving licence in the province where the applicant resides.

Procedure:

Fill in the form issued by the Dept. of Transportation and Urban Works and have this stamped by the organisation/Company you work for.

If you don't work, the form will be stamped by the Vietnamese Authorities in your residence area.

Submit the stamped form and the above mentioned documents together with your original passport and driving licence to the Department of Transportation and Urban Works.
Fee: 30.000 VND
Processing time: 5 working days (excluding Saturdays and Sundays).

For foreigners working for Diplomatic Missions and Projects under the Vietnamese Ministries the procedure is a little different. Please contact the Embassy for further information.

Recommendations:

While in Vietnam, Danish citizens are subject to Vietnamese laws and regulations, which sometimes differ significantly from those in Denmark.

Penalties for driving offences may be very severe. Driving without a proper licence may be punished with up to 3 years imprisonment, and driving unlicensed and causing a serious accident even to the point of causing death be punished with 10 to 20 years of imprisonment.

Driving in Vietnam is very difficult and can result in serious accidents with heavy compensation payments as a result. Be sure that your insurance has an appropriate coverage. If you ride a motorbike, wearing a protective helmet is compulsory by law since the 15 December 2007.
