The Vietnamese Tree Seed Project has a budget of DKK 7 million (USD 1.2 million.) Over a four-year period Danida supports the production, supply, and quality assurance of tree seeds to the forest sector in Vietnam
Forest is an important natural resource in the socio-economic and environmental development of Vietnam. Notably poor rural households benefit directly and indirectly from forest products and other inputs to life, supporting systems underlying agricultural production. Being aware of the significance of this resource and its degradation, the Government of Vietnam have approved plans to stop logging in order to minimise harvesting and have launched major initiatives to develop the re/afforestation. The goal is to increase the forest cover up to 43 per cent by 2010 via the national 5 million hectare reforestation programme.
The project has supported the composition of an announcement regarding forest and reproduction material that has been approved by the minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and send out with a decree. This has also been the case with a new strategy regarding forest and reproduction material 2006-2020.
The project has identified and entered into contract with 18 garden centres to work with the cultivation of quality seeds from 20 different woods. The garden centres are located in 13 different provinces and cover an area of 104 ha in total.
