Working with culture in Vietnam

We emphasize the importance of culture and art as a vital part of our strong partnership with Vietnam. The Embassy of Denmark in Vietnam is therefore actively involved in cultural activities and exchange programmes.

Cooperation in culture and art continues to be an important part of the Danish Vietnamese partnership. The Comprehensive Partnership Agreement signed between the two countries in 2013 included Culture and People to People links as one of the key areas of mutual interests for cooperation between the two countries. The two countries would further strengthen exchange and cooperation in the fields of art, culture and tourism and encourage direct cooperation between Danish and Vietnamese cultural institutions.

The Danish Strategy “The Right to Art and Culture” (June 2013) emphasizes that Denmark will continue to play an active and constructive role internationally in the area of culture and development. Strengthening cultural operation with other countries also brings inspiration from different parts of the world to Denmark and provides opportunities for mutual enrichment.

Vietnam-Denmark Development Cooperation in Culture
Culture has been a priority area for cooperation since the first Culture Programme was approved by the Board of Danida in 2006 and later prolonged until 2015. The overall objective of the programme is to increase cultural co-operation between Vietnam and Denmark with emphasis on creativity, people’s access, and participation in arts and promotion of cultural diversity.

The Culture Programme is implemented in cooperation with Vietnamese Partners, and focuses on following five strategic components:

The current programme will be phased out by December 2016.

Involvement in Cultural Activities
In 2016, Denmark and Vietnam celebrate the 45 year anniversary of Diplomatic Relations. As part of the celebration, a number of cultural activities will take place: Danish Culture Night, Danish Film Weeks, Danish Footprints, the Monsoon Music Festival, Denmark in Your Eyes writing contest and the establishment of a Denmark-Vietnam Alumni Network.

The Embassy also joins with EU countries in several major cultural activities in Vietnam such as the Festival Hué, European Literature Day, the European Film and Music Festival – and will continue to do so.

More information about the individual components of the Culture Programme as well as information about upcoming and previous cultural activities can be found on these pages.
