Important news about Danish banknotes

All older Danish banknotes and the current Danish 1000-krone banknote will no longer be legal tender after 31 May 2025.

Denmark will have new banknotes from 2028-2029, which means that all older Danish banknotes and all Danish 1000-krone banknotes will cease to be legal tender after 31 May 2025. Older banknotes mean the series of Danish banknotes issued in 1944, 1952, 1972 and 1997. These series are still legal tender in shops etc. today, but will cease to be legal tender, along with the 1000-krone banknote in the current series (from 2009), after 31 May 2025.

After 31 May 2025 and for one year thereafter, banknotes can be handed in at one of Danmarks Nationalbank's few drop-off points across Denmark. On Danmarks Nationalbank's website you can see which banknotes will no longer be legal tender and which ones will still be legal tender after 31 May 2025. You can also see what you can do with the banknotes until then.

Have you checked if you have any older Danish banknotes or Danish 1000-krone notes in your drawer at home? Remember to take the banknotes with you next time you visit Denmark.
